You might have come across different forms of kung fu: Shao-lin(少林), Wing-chun(詠春), Jeet Kune Do(截拳道), Choy Lee Fat(蔡李佛), Hung Kuen(洪拳), Tai-chi(太極), Qigong(氣功)....
they all originate from the martial art developed by monks from the Shaolin Temple. They developed and taught Kung Fu as a tool for strengthening the body and achieving the coordination of mind and body that is required to sustain prolonged mediative states.
From the different Shao-Lin temples came dozens of different styles with the Northern arts emphasizing kicks while the Southern arts put more emphasis on punches (南拳北腿).
Kung Fu is a highly intellectual art, with the ultimate goal being a symbiotic relationship between the physical and mental aspects of self.
To be adept, one must follow the Tao, the way, the essence of the philosophy and life of the originators of the arts. One must also learn to harness Chi - a subtle force, produced by mental discipline.
Chi (氣)is a basic concept in most Asian arts, martial and otherwise. It is described as the life force, and is the energy that lies at the root of martial and meditative arts practices.
